Mighty Mateo: Day 149 in the NICU
On August 26, doctors placed Mateo in a coma to give his little body the chance to rest and heal. It was such a hard day for us as parents, but sometimes these steps are necessary to help him move forward.
Today, we are grateful to share that he is showing progress. Mateo is allowing the ventilator to do most of the work, but every so often he still takes a few breaths on his own — a beautiful reminder that his spirit and strength are still fighting. His oxygen needs are currently around 40%, which is encouraging for where he is right now.
Medically, his right lung is showing improvement, and the team is focusing on helping to open up both lungs so he can breathe more comfortably in the future. Every adjustment, every careful step, is moving him closer to healing.
Emotionally, these days are filled with both worry and hope. Watching him fight reminds us daily of just how strong he is. Mateo has already overcome so much, and while the road is long, he continues to show us what true resilience looks like.
