I just want to take a second to recognize my other two beautiful babies. There's a term in the special needs and medical world for siblings like them and it’s called “glass children.” Glass children is a term for neurotypical siblings of children with chronic illnesses, disabilities, or intense behavioral needs, who often feel "seen through" or invisible. They often develop perfectionistic tendencies or downplay their own needs as to not stress out their parents.
This term has weighed heavily on me ever since I found out about it. We don’t intentionally ignore any one of our children, but I constantly struggle with that mom guilt of am I doing enough for my other kids, especially when I am deeply stressed out or consumed with helping Merritt. They make sacrifices other kids often don’t have to. Sometimes only one parent is home while the other is in the hospital. Sometimes a new face has to pick them up from school everyday, and someone can’t always attend their field day or other school activity because we have already taken off too much work or have another appointment for Merritt. Life is hard, and they feel it too. This is hard for me.
It is all about balance. So today I want to recognize my other two amazing kids. They are resilient, kind, loving, compassionate, and oh so funny. They support Merritt everyday. They read to him and give him so many kisses and hugs. They make him cards and play with him. I know they will continue to be his strength for many years to come.

Siblings of kids with disabilities are special. I am so thankful for them. I hope they feel loved and seen every day. They are strong and brave, just like Merritt, and they shine brightly in our family. Love you Milo and Madi!
