In the winter, Merida spends most of her time indoors to stay warm and safe. Because of her paralysis from the knees down, her feet are especially sensitive to the cold, so we keep her bundled up. Outdoor play is limited to just a few minutes to avoid frostbite, but we take her to museums and malls for outings. Play areas aren’t often accessible, though the Trexo would allow her to walk in the mall—something she cherishes, saying, “I can walk in the mall, mum, and hold your hand.” Her words remind us how deeply she notices the world and longs to be included like any other child.
