Day 1 of house hunting in Maryland is officially in the books, and wow, did it deliver. If you’ve ever looked for a home with specific needs, you know it’s not just about paint colors and curb appeal. For us, every doorway, hallway, and entrance tells a story about whether Mateo can safely and comfortably live there.

Here’s how Day 1 went:

🏠 Home #1:

Immediate “no.” The layout had narrow spaces that wouldn’t work for accessibility, and it was located in a community with a very strict HOA. That would limit our ability to make exterior modifications like ramps or accessible entrances, non-negotiables for Mateo. Easy pass.

🏠 Home #2:

A very interesting contender. This home is already fully accessible and sits on a beautiful, inviting property. The backyard alone made us pause and dream a little.

That said, it’s an older home and would need renovations to bring it up to date. There are some concerns:

  • Basement flooding risk if power goes out due to sump pump dependency
  • Doors would need to be replaced with key-only locks
  • Power lines run behind the property
  • The primary suite relies solely on baseboard heating

There’s also a workshop above a two-car garage, which is a bonus, but given the age of the home, we’re being cautious about potential hidden issues. Still a strong contender, just with thoughtful consideration.

🏠 Home #3:

A new-build opportunity. The downside? It would likely take up to two years to complete and sits on a smaller lot. While new construction has appeal, the timeline doesn’t align with Mateo’s current and immediate care needs.

🏚️ Home #4 (aka “The Zombie House”):

A foreclosed property that would require a full gut and rebuild. While the lot was large, the backyard would need to be significantly flattened to reduce flooding risk. Ultimately, we decided this was too big of a project, and too risky, for where we are in our lives right now. Sometimes “potential” really does mean “run.”

We also had to adjust our plans throughout the day because Mateo began spiking a fever. We were hoping to tour medical facilities and explore more neighborhoods, but as always, Mateo’s needs come first. That’s the reality of medical parenting. (Well life in general) plans change, priorities shift, and flexibility becomes essential.

We’re hoping Mateo feels a bit better tomorrow so we can explore a little more, but we’re taking it hour by hour and playing it by ear.

Thank you for supporting this journey and making trips like this possible. Every donation helps us navigate these big decisions thoughtfully and responsibly as we work toward giving Mateo the best possible foundation for his future. 💙
