One week from right now, Brandon and I will be enjoying our first night on Kauai and it cannot come soon enough!
Last month, I finally started hyperbaric oxygen therapy and on the 3rd day, I wound up having a grand mal seizure in the tank. It was a traumatic ordeal that landed me in the ER and when I woke up, I also had a panic attack too because they had me bound in restraints. I know it was for my safety but I was so disoriented (and just claustrophobic enough) that it was pretty terrifying at the time. It's rare but not necessarily uncommon for oxygen tanks to cause seizures,especially if you've had one before and because of my prior syncope, they were already titrating my levels ... but it was obviously too much for my nervous system so I ended the treatment.
Thankfully, I already had brain and spine MRI'a scheduled from my episode last year and praise be, neither showed any evidence of metastatic disease nor structural abnormalities that could contribute to seizures!!! My doctor admitted how worried he was that I had a brain tumor so you can imagine how scared I was and relieved that my results are clear. I'll still be doing a 48-hour EEG and full neuro workup to rule out epilepsy but in the meantime, I've been cleared to fly with some backup medication.
After all these strange health complications, not to mention the impact of cancer and ongoing treatment, I am toast. The chance to go back to Kauai to checkout, reset, and heal is such a gift and I'm excited to tell you about all the magic that happens while we're there! Plus, Brandon and I are celebrating our 15th wedding anniversary in May and since I was in grad school at the time, we never really had an official honeymoon so it's all the more special that we get to go on this trip together.
Thank you for being excited for us and thank you for your generous donations for the trip. But also, please keep them coming so we can still explore the whole island despite the absurd gas prices. Haha but not really. ;-)
