It’s was a rocky road to surgery this morning. Leah spiked a fever overnight and then ended up puking. We weren’t sure that surgery would happen. Thankfully her fever came down and it appears maybe she just chugged too much water and gagged because it was a one time occurrence. They ended up taking her a bit late because they needed to squeeze another kiddo before her. Just heart wrenching to not be able to meet her hunger and thirst needs on top of everything else going on.
4:20pm- Leah is out of surgery.
Unfortunately, Leah’s right hand needed more than they were expecting. They were hoping to use a skin graft spray but due to the deepness of the burn they had to pivot and use a full graft for her right palm, up the side of the outside of her hand and her pinky finger. Recovery wise this is unfortunate because she will probably deal with more contractures that are going to need more stretching and therapy as well as risk for additional procedures. They still are confident that she will get full function back it’s just going to be a longer, harder road.
The rest of the burns received mesh grafting as expected. Think- they cut off Leah’s skin. Put it into a machine that stretches it out into a mesh (kinda fishnet) pattern.
They had to take 3 strips of skin off of each side- buttocks and thighs. These wounds are going to be super ouchy for the next few days on top of her hands and arms.
Because Leah had a fever this morning they will be adding antibiotics to her medication regiments in hopes that if she is getting an infection it will fight it off. It’s harder for them to monitor because the dressings she has on will need to stay on longer.
Current hope is that Leah will get to go home tomorrow- no fully made decision until we see how tonight goes. She will have to return for a dressing change for her right hand at the beginning of the week (they have to monitor it more closely). The other dressing will stay on a bit longer.
Leah is still in recovery as of this writing. The OT has gone down to get her braces readjusted to her new bandages and on her before she is fully alert.

The next few days are going to be ROUGH! More wounds=more pain for our sweet girl. But so thankful to take a break from dressing changes.
Pray the harvest sites heal with the least amount of scaring
Pray that discharge happens at the perfect moment. We all want to listen to what her body is saying but getting her out of her would be amazing! We want her to be distracted by the fresh air and not be stuck in this one room.
Pray for mom and dad as they persevere. Girlie is fiesty right now and they need extra patience. Exhaustion and tiredness are setting in.
