Making mistakes in what may be Leah’s new normal

I’m not sure we’ve ever paid such close attention to the movements of a hand before. Leah is rocking her left hand movements. Leah is NOT rocking her right hand movements. We are constantly reminding her that her right hand is healing and that she can use it again but have you ever tried to get a two year old to do something that they don’t want to do? 😂 Now try to get a two year old recovering from a burn to do something that they don’t want to do! The therapist say that it’s more a fear behavior than a pain behavior but it’s obviously still ouchy too.

Today was the “closest” to normal day that Leah has had since the accident. She got some short play time with her cousins this morning before crashing moodily at nap time. It took her a bit to recover and we really pushed some creative play therapy this afternoon. We did stretches while drawing hand prints on the door, we found little animals in our theraputty, we did shapes with her right hand in our shape sorter, we did do-a-dots and so much more. We tried to be really intentional with our play. And we aren’t beyond bribes to get her to use that right hand.

This evening was our first at home bath and dressing change. It was heart breaking. We made mistakes. Emotions were high. And we powered through. But believe us, it’s not for the faint of heart. We will rewatch our dressing videos and be ready to do it again tomorrow.
