Kelly Shirley
All,
I wanted to let everyone know that Kelly continues to be in the ICU at Northside Hospital in Atlanta. Things continue to be challenging for Kelly. What was initially thought to be challenges with pneumonia have led doctors to conclude that a lot of Kelly's complications are more to do with her cancer. It appears her cancer is more aggressive than her targeted therapy pill can handle. Thus, they will continue an aggressive chemo treatment every 3 weeks in hopes of battling the cancer and increasing her lung capacity.
Kelly continues to be intubated and on a ventilator but has shown slight improvements with her vent settings but not enough to be extubated or have the vent removed. It was decided late last week that Kelly will go through a tracheostomy which will allow her to be less sedated and have the ability to focus on physical therapy while we continue the treatment of chemo and targeted therapy. The hope is that Kelly will eventually get to the point of coming off the ventilator as well as having the trach removed. We pray with time along with the added treatment that Kelly will continue to persevere over this challenging time. Kelly's focus and attitude never waivers and is constantly asking what she can do or achieve each day.
Myself along with our entire family are super grateful for the overwhelming amounts of prayer and support as we navigate this set back but continue to stay encouraged that God will ultimately see Kelly through this and back home to her girls.
Thank you for the continued prayers!
Chad
