Kelly Shirley
Hi Everyone,
Kelly has experienced another set back. This past Sunday we had to bring Kelly back the the ER. Her oxygen levels and breathing continued to decline since she was discharged last Friday. Unfortunately the efforts in the ER to help her breathing did not work and Kelly was admitted to the ICU where she was intubated and put on a ventilator. After a couple of days on the ventilator, they were able to exubate her and fit her with a high flow nasal cannula. This seemed to stabilize her for a couple of days but after experiencing some dangerous heart rate levels and heavy labored breathing the decision was made to re-intubate her last night.
With everything Kelly has been through this year her right lung continues to struggle with what they thought was a large amount of inflammation and scar tissue from the various pneumonias and radiation she was treated with. Unfortunately, the medications and steroid regimes have not shown enough progress in treating this.
Her team of doctors are still working through the right approach to increase her lung capacity. We're pending an update from her Pulmonary doctor. Her Oncologist did decide yesterday evening before last nights intubation to start Kelly on some chemotherapy. The hope is that the chemo will aid in reducing the inflammation, rid any cancer cells that might be causing her issues, and hopefully help the function of her right lung.
While the unknown has been hard to deal, we are hopeful and pray that Kelly will be able to pull through all of this. Please pray that the doctors are able to determine the right treatment to hopefully get her off the ventilator and on the road to recovery.
