Do you know someone who is being treated for cancer and deserves a break from all the cancer things? We know an amazing place they can go, hosted by a woman who's "been there." This week, while Scott is at sleepaway camp, we went to Second Wind Cancer Retreat in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Georgia for a few days. Since Marcus is currently feeling ok, we walked around Blue Ridge and McCaysville during the day, eating well at local restaurants. In the evening, we sat on the porch for hours, listening to the sounds of frogs and the babbling creek below and watching the lighting bugs flitter around the yard. And because the house has no WiFi and little cell phone signal, we were not interrupted by appointment or prescription reminder calls or tempted to look at recent medical notes in MyChart. We could just unplug and enjoy nature and each other's company.

Host Marti Nunn, asked me to spread the word about Second Wind, as visitor requests have dropped off after Covid, and I could not recommend her nonprofit more to those enduring cancer and their loved one. Marti, who had cancer years ago and retreated to her family farm during treatment, later had a vision of building a house on the property and allowing people receiving cancer treatment to escape there with a friend or family member for rejuvenation. Since 2009, hundreds of folks have stayed at Second Wind for free, enjoying the beautiful home and mountain views. All the cancer patient has to do to request a visit is to send the forms from the website (one signed by a doctor) to the email on this page:

In a world where sometimes it seems like there is only bad news, we are again reminded that there are good people making a positive difference in others' lives. Like Marti, like you. Please spread the word about Second Wind and take care.
