"This is the last straw!" -Frank Burns
"Remind me to order more straws." -Hawkeye
Yesterday was another early day. I was in Orlando before 7:30AM at the Hospital and checking in for surgery. This was my 3rd Bone Marrow Pull. The first one was when I was in the Intensive Care Unit last year and it was used by my now primary Hematologist to diagnose my condition. The second pull was used by my primary transplant Doctor to monitor the decline of my Marrow. Yesterday the pull was to measure possible seeding and growth of the donors marrow 30 days after transplant.

"One of us has to." -Radar
The results of the pull will take several days for testing. The samples need to be measured in different ways and this all takes time. In addition some of it has to be tested via culturing (a laboratory or biological process of growing and multiplying living cells, microorganisms, or tissue samples in a controlled artificial environment).
How a Bone Marrow pull works: You lie prone (face down) or on your side while a local anesthetic numbs the skin and bone surface; moderate or conscious sedation is frequently used. Then a radiologist uses a CT (Computed Tomography) scan via X-Rays to map landmarks in advance so the Doctor can use a specialized drill or needle (such as a Jamshidi or powered system) into the bone to pull samples. I got to lay face down on a narrow flat metal plate that slides into the CT machine with my arms in a triangle position above my head as the plate is very narrow. Last time they played loud music so I didn't hear drill clearly, this time no ACDC. The first time they also played music but I could feel my hip press into the table and hear the metal ting when the Doctor struck the needle probe with the metal mallet.

A few asked for some more technical details, I hope this posts helps explain more clearly.
Have a wonderful evening depending on what coast you are on or a great night!
