Jade Cato's Recovery
We have been in clinic Monday, Wednesday, and Friday this week! Only 2 more shots left until we are done with the Rylaze injections. Like I said it’s been like 67 shots total! We are so thankful to be down to the final doses. Maintenance will really look like maintenance after next week! Jade has not been accessed all week, she has chosen the IV all 3 days this week. She has even allowed Demi to come with us. When she is accessed, she doesn’t like anyone to be around. She handles the IV so much better. She needs to still keep the port because some chemo (like vincristine) shouldn’t be given though an IV because it can actually burn you (terrible, right?)! Jade and I have been asked to do a radio interview for UF’s upcoming bear-a-thon. I’ll give you details on when to tune in if you want to hear more of our story and the importance of donating to cancer research and support for kids in treatment! It will be on K-country and wind-FM. We got the official date that Jade will ring the golden bell! June 25, 2026! She still has about a year and a half of Maintenance treatment, and we are celebrating every day with her anyways…. But June 25, 2026 will be an even bigger celebration. I don’t know exactly what we will do, but I know I will be praising and thanking God each and everyday before and after! Jade has lost a lot of strength, in part from chemo, but also from de-conditioning. For about a year Jade’s platelets were extremely low, which can lead to bruising and bleeding. When platelets are extremely low the slightest puncture can be extremely concerning. Sometime spontaneous bleeds happen even without injury when platelets are extremely low. There was about a month that Jade’s platelets sat at 0. It didn’t matter how many transfusions they gave her, the next morning when they would draw labs they would be back down to 0. We had to limit pretty much all
activities. Her platelets are within normal range and should stay that way so she is able to do much more, but when you haven’t used your body the way you did before things don’t always bounce right back. Her ankles are very weak. Her stamina and endurance are low for physical activities and this will take time to build back up. Overall, she is doing well. She is so excited for upcoming events and trips planned with friends and family!
Please continue to pray for Jade. Even when things are going well, she is experiencing aches and pains that 10 years shouldn’t have to feel. She is a tough cookie and we are all so proud of her, but that fact that she has to be will never feel right. I will always wish it was me and not her. As a parent we hate seeing our kids sick… with a fever, with the flu…we want to take it away… I will always want to take this from her… Always.
