Jade made counts and is getting two chemos today. She’s getting Vincristine and methotrexate. Her ANC was 730, but it will go down again after these chemos hit her system. That means more seclusion due to all the sickness around. As hard as it is to somewhat isolate, the thought of a trip to the ER and then another hospital admission is much more daunting. At least at home we have all of our things and all of our family under the same roof.
This is the last chemo until we start maintenance on January 30th! Maintenance is essentially a lower dose chemo plan to keep the leukemia in remission and continue to reset her bone marrow to only produce healthy cells. It is a mix of a few IV chemos, but mostly oral chemos and steroids. The majority of maintenance can be done at home.
The cycle is 84 days. On day 1 and 29 we come to the hospital for lumbar puncture with chemo. Also on day 1 she will get IV vincristine. She will take steroids on day 1-5. And she will take the oral chemos through the 84 day round. She does have a makeup chemo this maintenance round so we will be here more for that. It can be difficult to get the dosage just right for the oral meds, so we will do bloodwork often to see what numbers look like to get the dosage correct for her. The goal is to keep her numbers suppressed, but not in a state of severe neutropenia. Hopefully her ANC will stay around 1000. That will give her a decent immune system, but still in a suppressed state.
