Harper's Recovery
Hard updates are so difficult to share.
Last Friday, after several emergency department visits for fevers and growing concern about Harper’s distended abdomen, we took her to clinic. Her oncologist admitted her and ordered a CT scan.
The tumor on her liver had doubled in size in just one month. The surgeons in Savannah were not comfortable operating, so we started chemotherapy that same day. Her oncologist also reached out to specialists in Atlanta. Yesterday, Harper’s case was presented to a tumor board made up of Wilms tumor experts and pediatric liver surgeons. Unfortunately, they were not only concerned about her liver, but also saw spots in her abdomen that appear to be seeded, making surgical removal nearly impossible.
We had really hoped surgery would be an option, and we are absolutely devastated.
Harper will continue chemotherapy and will have an MRI after the next cycle. If chemo is able to shrink the tumors at all, we will pursue additional radiation. Even with that, it is unlikely that chemotherapy and radiation alone will be curative.
Harper is still in the hospital, but thankfully she is feeling more comfortable after finishing chemo. She even got a visit from the Georgia Hockey Team Today and Davy from the Ghost Pirates. We are working to set up home supports and are hopeful she can come home early next week.
We are beyond heartbroken, and this still doesn’t feel real. Please continue to send all the love, prayers, and comforting vibes Harper’s way.
