He's Coming Back!

I will always remember our first trip to South Carolina after Greg’s diagnosis. With such a grim foreshadowing of what to expect, we had a great desire to see Greg return to his home town. (Since that first visit, he has now returned four times.) Each visit as we drive over the state line, we meet that line with a, “Wow! Only what God can do” excitement and acknowledgement.

The last couple of days have also been a “Wow! Only God can do this…” moments. Greg has worked on two projects, cleaning the garage and caulking our tub. He is very meticulous with how things are cleaned and repaired. He has been his “old self” placing “like tools” together and the precision of his caulking looks like a professional.

Greg’s sense of humor continues to make us both smile, if not an “all out” belly laugh. He struggles some with his short term memory, but even that seems to have improved.

Today, Greg got a call from Tim with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He asked Greg’s help. He needed a suggestion for someone to give a devotion to an area high school's pre game football meeting. Greg said to Tim, “I know just the guy.”

I had the honor of sitting in a room with about 40 football players as Greg stood before them to share the subject chosen by the Coach, The topic was “Adversity!” Greg challenged the young men to let God’s Word be the lamp for their feet and a light for their path.

The news from our most recent trip to the specialist at Duke, once again confirmed all of Greg’s tumors are either shrinking or have stabilized. He will continue to have monthly cycles of chemotherapy through November. Then we are back at Duke to determine next steps.

This week as we drove across the state line, Greg threw up a hand and said, “I’m coming back!” I giggled and commented we would return in a couple of months for the next appointment, but he clarified…. “No, I’M really coming back!” And so he is!

Sometimes our circumstances don’t say “Mighty Warrior” but like Gideon in the Bible God sees what we sometimes cannot see, but He uses us anyway and we are so very grateful. Mighty Warrior Greg is doing God’s work God’s way painful at times but greatly rewarding!
