Recovering and Fighting

Since returning from Texas, Elijah and I have both been very under the weather. Luckily we both got antibiotics and seem to be on the mend. It has been a very long week of coughing, sneezing, sore throats, fevers, and misery.

One thing that has been amazing about the state of Colorado is the ability to get kids like Elijah the help that they need. Elijah had 24 hours of nursing and because Colorado has the paid family caregiver option, I was able to work as his nurse for some of those hours and have outside nursing come for the remaining hours. This allowed Elijah to improve tremendously in his overall health and keep him out of the hospital. Last summer, Medicaid decided that this was not needed anymore and cut his hours to only 11. This made me have to let go of night nursing and become his only caregiver. I sleep in his room and literally work 24 hours per day with zero help. We re-ran the tool that medicaid uses to determine how many hours a child qualifies for and without a doubt, he still qualifies for 24. We tried to get the hours back and now they say we get ZERO! Unfortunately we are not the only family that are going through this. So many families like us are losing everything and people are freaking out. We are having to hire lawyers and get a judge to rule on our hours. I have heard that even if we win in court, they can come back and do this to us next year and we have to do it all over again. Its very stressful and frustrating.

My request is that you keep our family and the other families dealing with this in your prayers. If you are local, I ask that you spread the word of what is happening and help us bring this to light. This is not right and we need to come together and fight this!
