Reflecting on Colton's 1st Year

I started to write this on Sunday, August 16th, the day after Colton's birthday party. I was feeling so overwhelmed with gratitude about how far we've come. Unfortunately, my very lengthy entry got deleted :(. But I felt it was important to document some of these things and to provide everyone with an update and some details about this past year. We are also making such great strides and could not have done so without this amazing community!
Most of you know a lot about our NICU stay and how devastating that is for any parent. It is one of the most unnatural things a parent has to go through. Our number one goal was to get our little baby home. But we had no idea what lied ahead.
We had to do a hospital stay the first night to ensure we could properly care for Colton. He had to be fed every 3 hours by g-tube and that machine was not an easy thing to learn! Colton had also grown accustomed to a very different way of sleeping in the NICU. We didn't get one solid hour of sleep. It was quite scary to take our little one home! But we knew were blessed as many have had to stay much longer.
Once we got home many challenges lay ahead. Colton hated being g-tube fed. We also discovered he had a tongue and lip tie. We had to have a painful procedure done on him and it was quite traumatic from Colton, us, and our wonderful mother-in-law who was taking care of him during the day while we worked. He hated car rides, he had tummy issues, he was a very upset boy given all that he was battling and had gone through. On top of this, we didn't expect the sporadic ER visits that would turn into hospital stays. There were days we didn't know how we'd make it through and we continuously look back and are not sure how we did...
But God...
He carried us through and continues to. We may not always handle everyday with grace and patience but we could not be more grateful for the gift of Colton. He is worth every penny and every lost hour of sleep. This journey has made us so incredibly thankful for where we are at now. Colton is such a happy, sweet, and silly boy. After months of screaming, he now only cries to let us know he is tired or teething. What a great gift!
We just finished his first round of intensive therapy. It definitely wasn't his favorite activity but he persevered! We are heading to Panama for his first round of stem cells on September 27th and we are so excited for what God is going to do through this amazing treatment. We would not be able to go without everyone's support. We are truly so grateful for every dollar we have received. We have seen one life changing story after another in our Facebook group and it has given us so much hope.
