After 3 1/2 weeks in Rehab (6 weeks total in hospital) Chris has finally had a neuro follow up with the surgeon from MUSC. After a transport to West Ashley he had a good report, the incision on his neck is healing well. The trip back however was interesting. Chris is navigating life in his chair and finding ways to get help when necessary. A little angel came to his aid and hung with him while he waited on transport.
All in all the rehabilitation at Roper has been amazing. It's hard to believe Chris will be headed home next week. They are cramming in as much therapy, spinal cord injury education and working with insurance to get us all they can get us for home health. We tweaked out the 4 1/2 weeks so we won't be getting an extension.
So where does that leave Chris in his recovery you might be thinking.....
Although he has more and more movement, his brain can't quite tell his nerves how to respond. He finally has some movement in his left wrist which the Dr was very pleased with. His chair transfers are getting stronger which will be very important for getting in and out of the car for Outpatient Rehab.
After a week or so at home with some in home PT and home healthcare help Chris will make it back to the Rehab hospital for 2-3 appointments a week. We will be navigating travel and those logistics.
We are creating space for him to move around freely with minimum obstacles for his power chair. We will be so happy just to breathe for a week or so. Please keep us in your prayers for peace and ease of transition.
