Ahahahaaaaa!!! SHUT UP!! Is this not the coooolest thing ever?!

Okay rewind, I didn’t actually hear Camilla’s first word. Bummer right?

During our Fourth of July trip, I came down stairs to the living room to my Grandma frea👏🏼king👏🏼 out👏🏼
“She said hi! She said hi to me! She looked at me and said hi! I swear she said hi to me! Say it again Camilla!”

It’s not that I didn’t believe her.
It’s not that I didn’t believe Camilla could say hi.
It’s just… I couldn’t even imagine what her voice sounded like.

The next Thursday, I walked into Camilla’s room to get her ready for the morning. She locked eyes with me and began moving her jaw up and down, up and down, up and down. Eventually a “hh” “hh” “hh” came out with each open and close.

My heart dropped down to my stomach. If you have a special needs kid, I know you know this moment. It’s the moment when they’re right on the cusp of doing something previously thought to be impossible. Time slows down, anticipation rises with every millisecond, and you hold your breath praying you don’t disrupt whatever set of magically perfect circumstances have created THIS moment.

After several more mouth movements, it finally came out. Clear as day. “hi!”
🥹🥲😭😭😭😭😭

Are you kidding me?!?

I told nobody except Carson and our nurse. Largely because the skill is so new. I don’t want Camilla to feel pressure to perform a “new trick” for excited neighbors, church members, therapists, etc. I want her to have the space and low pressure environment to keep practicing.

This past week, her nurse got a “hi” too. Clear as day. More intentional than any greeting you’ve ever received.

Slowly but surely, this magical miracle girl is getting a vocabulary. God willing, lots more words will come too🙏🏼
