Today was a good day. In a plot twist, instead of starting in late July, 48 hours ago we learned there was an option to start my chemo two weeks earlier via IV and still get the port surgically inserted before the second dose.
Grandma B helped with the kids and Jim came with me to the local oncology/infusion center about fifteen minutes away, following the MSK advised protocol. The whole local team moved quickly to pull this off and we are so grateful.
Today felt seamless and positive, with a few serendipitous moments. Although we anticipate several hard days to come with nausea, etc- so far so good with the IV site and overall feeling.
So many of you reached out, and we felt your strength and love through texts and prayer- thank you.
We also loved the nurse who is named Julie, is from Scranton but lived in Philly for years before Ithaca, is funny and authentic, and recognized me- I tested her preschooler in the past so she felt like helping me now was a beautiful circle. Love those small world connections.
Also, at oncology we immediately ran into a dear old friend from CNS preschool days who we’d lost touch with. She not only survived breast cancer herself, but also trains all of the oncology nurses there. She was on site today, so able to give a hug and reassurance and friend to friend advice about managing kids and calming the challenging thoughts.
We appreciate prayers that the kids will keep being resilient, but also be quiet as they run around the house wearing Amazon bags like the adorable weirdos they are. We appreciate prayers that this life-saving medicine works quickly. We appreciate prayers that Steph can manage any side effects and rest when possible, and that Jim stays strong as he manages everything else. We’ve got this - and we appreciate all of you.
