A Big Step & Facility Transfer:
  • The Move to Lakeview: Austin was safely transferred from UW Hospital in Madison to Lakeview Specialty Hospital and Rehab in Waterford! He handled the ambulance transport like a champion.
  • Evaluation Phase: Over the next few days, the care team at Lakeview will evaluate him and get to know his current baselines so they can build a personalized, comprehensive rehabilitation plan with set milestones to keep him progressing forward.

Neurological Progress & Milestones:
  • An Amazing Moment: He actually moved his Mom’s hand from his side over to his lap! While the neurologist noted this was likely a rare burst of movement that we might not see repeatedly just yet, it was incredible for him Mom to witness.
  • Brain Wave Trial Results: The results came back and showed that his brain is triggering to voices and commands just as it should! They weren't able to test his right side due to avoiding his surgical site, but knowing his brain is actively processing commands is huge news.
  • Left Frontal Lobe Notes: The scans did indicate some left frontal lobe damage. The frontal lobe plays a key role in movement, motor planning, speech production, and organizing thoughts and emotions, so understanding this helps his new therapy team tailor his rehabilitation specifically to these areas as he continues to wake up and heal.
  • Off Anti-Seizure Meds: Because he has shown zero seizure activity, the team has completely taken him off his low-dose anti-seizure medication today!
  • CT Scan: His follow-up CT scan on the VP shunt looked great, and everything is right where it should be.

Respiratory Update:
  • Ventilator Adjustments: Because he was showing signs of being exhausted from the effort of breathing on his own, the team transitioned him from pressure support back onto full ventilation and oxygen to give his body a much-needed rest.

Schedule & Visitor Reminder:
  • MRI Delayed: The MRI for the behavioral study was unable to be performed today, prior to being transferred.  We are not sure when and if this will happen.
  • Visitor Policy: As he settles into his new room and the Lakeview staff completes their initial evaluations, we kindly ask that visitors continue to hold off for now. We will keep everyone updated on when he is ready for company!

Heartfelt Thanks & Community Events:
  • Thank You, UW Madison! We want to extend a special thank you to the TLC ICU care team, nurses, doctors, and social workers at UW Madison for their exceptional care, dedication, and support for Austin over the past four and a half weeks. We are endlessly grateful for everything you did for him!
  • Ride With Austin Fundraiser: Austin’s friend Jessie is hosting a fundraiser on September 26th at Rascals (2:00 PM – 6:00 PM) for hot dogs, $5 Ride With Austin bracelets, and togetherness! A HUGE THANK YOU TO JESSIE!!!                                  Ride With Austin Facebook Event
  • Stand with Austin Benefit Ride (October 10th): A Benefit Ride to "Stand with Austin" is being organized for October 10th! Full details will be shared once everything is finalized. A HUGE THANK YOU TO JASON!!!        In the meantime, we are currently looking for gift basket and raffle item donations for the benefit—please reach out if you or a business would like to contribute!

This transition to rehab marks a major new chapter in his recovery. Thank you all so much for your continuous love, prayers, support and standing by Austin as he takes on this next phase!
