A Week Post-Op

Well, it's officially been one week (and a day) since my double mastectomy and DIEP Flap reconstruction surgery. I'm....exhausted. I got my drains out today though and that's a huge relief. I was always a bit worried if the dogs got too close they'd get a foot in there and rip them out or something. Now, I'm less worried to snuggle the babies.

We're still waiting on oncotyping to come back from California. This is where they test the tumors and give them a rating that describes the level of risk for recurrence or spread. This is now especially important as unfortunately one of my tumors did not come out with clear margins. Margins are the area around the tumor, the goal when removing cancer is to always have clear margins - no cancer cells. So, to make it short and concise, unfortunately some cancer cells were left behind in me. I am not upset with my surgeon. He explained that this is the first time in 11 years he ever had positive margins. He feels horrible. But the area looked clear and fine. So even after 8.5 hours in surgery I'm still not cancer free. The entire team is back on it though, deciding what our best course of action will be. We might go back in (not ideal as my plastic surgeon did such a great job with the reconstruction), do chemo, radiation, or any combination thereof. I was really excited to not need chemo, but unfortunately that's back on the table.Ā

I will share the plan as soon as we know the plan. For now I'm trying to rest and recover from surgery. Kevin's taking great care of me. Thank you to everyone who stopped by - either in the hospital or at my home or checked on me other ways.Ā

I’m sorry. It really sucks not enough margins were removed to be clear, Amy. It sounds overwhelming for you to think about after probably expecting surgery to get it all
