9:45pm - Mom had surgery to fix two tiny holes that couldn't be detected on the CT that caused an infection/abscess. Her small bowel tissue was too fragile to stitch, so doctors used special materials (Amnio-fix and Vista Seal) to close the holes and put in 2 accordion drains to help her heal.
Amy has been here since 8am so I just sent her home and mom should be up from the recovery room any minute.
Mom probably can’t eat for 6 weeks and will get nutrients through an IV/TPN (again). Mom needed two blood transfusions and although she has been through a lot the surgeon said mom is in much better coming out of this surgery than the last one (blood pressure better, kidneys working better, etc). She’ll likely stay in the hospital for two more weeks and then rehab here or at home. She still has an infection (sepsis but not septic shock) that needs to clear up before she can fully recover. The surgeon sat with us answering questions for about 30 minutes and explained she may still feel worse before she gets better.
It's going to be a long road but so thankful for everyone and the amazing nursing care she's been receiving. Normally we would spend the night every night with someone in the hospital but because mom has been so alert and we've loved the nurses we've been going home at night. Tonight she was scared and asked one of to stay and since I can sleep anywhere - I'm staying here tonight.
