Camila has a wheelchair ramp and two of her mobility devices have arrived! Look at that smile just beaming through the screen!
Pause for a moment with me. Feel what this feels like with us.
I can’t help but cry out of pure joy for her and relief for myself. I feel deeply overwhelmed by the significance of accessibility for Camila.
Disability parenting is full of hard decisions. The weight of those decisions can feel too heavy to carry. The decision to install a 30ft wheelchair ramp was one of those heavy decisions. There was a permanence compounded by the grief I felt for Camila at the time. I found myself getting caught up in the narratives of others. “But what if she does start crawling, standing, walking, running? Doesn’t this feel a bit premature?” or “You don’t know what her diagnosis is. You should wait until then to decide if she needs a ramp.” It made me question what I was seeing right in front of me. A fiercely independent little girl who didn’t complain much about her disabled body and who probably would love another option to move her body. The decision became easy then and so have the many decisions that have followed.
Camila is working very hard to learn how to use the Permobil Explorer Mini (pictured left) with confidence. It requires many skills and repetition. Each day she becomes increasingly eager to self-initiate movement. Frankie and I feel incredibly lucky to have a front row seat to witness it all. We are also grateful for her providers who are working diligently within sessions to support her success. When she is ready, she will work on skills needed to maneuver the GoBro (pictured right) and Scooot (which is nearly here).
Let’s all celebrate this joy and flood this post with comments. I will read every single one to Camila as a reminder to all of us that she has the best people in her corner.

Those are some pretty cool mobility devices and I must say you look adorable in them. But more importantly, this equipment is going to allow you to have some autonomy and freedom to choose where you want to explore.
I know it will be a lot of hard work mastering the skills you will need to use these devices but I know you have the strength and determination to do it. Plus you have been blessed with wonderful parents, family and providers you can rely on.
All I keep thinking about is that Dr Seuss book , “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” I can’t wait to see what new adventures you will have. I will do my best just to try to keep up you.
I love you and am so proud of you. You are a blessing to me. Love, Grandma
