Camila’s infection panel and biopsy results came back remarkably normal! No active infection was detected, and there is no indication of chronic inflammation.
The concern was that her symptoms resembled those of Very Early Onset Inflammatory Bowel Disease (VEO-IBD). Since initial studies ruled out most common infections and her symptoms continued to progress, her medical team suspected a possible autoimmune disease, such as VEO-IBD.
The upper endoscopy and colonoscopy allowed for more comprehensive testing, including a broad GI PCR panel, which detects bacteria, viruses, and parasites that cause infections and inflammation in the digestive system. We received the panel results within an hour of the procedure, and they came back negative. However, the biopsy results suggest that the likely cause of her symptoms was an infection—one that is no longer active and was undetectable by both stool studies and the PCR panel.
Given the severity of inflammation in her gut, Camila will be on aminosalicylates for three months to directly target and reduce inflammation in her colon. We are hopeful this will provide her the relief she needs and help her avoid further procedures for some time.
Thank you for your thoughts, prayers, check-ins, and meals. We can collectively breathe a sigh of relief!
With love,
