Well, here goes...
Not news we were hoping for at all. We are struggling.
I will start with this. Geisinger deemed Baby A the smaller twin because of the location of Baby to my cervix (presumably Baby A would be born first). CHOP has changed it up because A is usually the one doing well, and B is usually the struggling one.
Baby B (the small one) went from the 8th percentile last week on Wednesday at Geisinger to only the 2nd percentile today. The discrepancy between Baby sizes was at 13% then. They begin to worry a little more when that number hits 25%. Today, the discrepancy between babies exceeded 30%. In only 5 days time, the change was enormous.
Baby B's heart seems strong, but when her heart is resting, the blood isn't flowing from the placenta correctly. Essentially, between beats, Baby B is getting no return blood flow. The doctor says she is in no imminent danger right now, but the moment there is reverse flow (meaning her blood is leaving her body and going into the placenta when her heart is resting) her demise will follow soon after.
They are giving us time to see if anything changes. We will go to Geisinger at the end of this week for another ultrasound, and then return to Philadelphia on July 1st. If Baby is stable, we can wait it out, but if anything has changed, we have to make a decision and fast.
I have signed consent forms in advance in the event there is an emergency. If Baby B passes unassisted, Baby A could suffer neurological damage from the split second change in flow through the placenta, or worse, pass away as well.
If things get worse in the next couple of weeks, I will go into surgery and they will slowly cut off blood supply to Baby B, with the hope that it gives Baby A a fighting chance. This means, I will deliver two babies when it's time, but only one has a chance at coming home with us.
Our hearts are broken. We seen our two girls today wiggling around, and Baby B had hiccups. If Eric and I can find time and some extra money, we hope to get a private ultrasound done where we will leave with a video of our babies, just in case.
