If you’ve spent any time on a boat, you know the expression: slow like a pro. It’s not about being sluggish, it’s about knowing that going slow, on purpose, is what gets you where you’re going without ending up on The Qualified Captain.
Ian’s body did the hard part. The tumor is out, the nerve looked good, and now it’s just… time. Time to heal, time to adjust, time to recover. And if you know Ian, you know that’s the hardest part for him.
The last couple of days have been quiet on purpose. We’ve been in the hotel, watching Netflix, deep into true crime territory (Toxic Love Story and Maternal Instincts = wow, and we finished the whole I Will Find You series).
Last night we met up with friends from CT, the Boos, who happen to be out here on vacation too, and had the best grilled cheeses and even better company at a quiet outdoor table. It was a good night. But by the end of it, you could see it: processing conversation, multiple voices, all that stimulation, it took something out of Ian. He was wiped.
Today we sat by the pool for a while. Fresh air, sun, nothing to process. Simple, and exactly what he needed. It’s a good reminder, for both of us, that recovery isn’t linear and it isn’t fast. It’s slow like a pro.
