Today we got up early for a trip to the hospital to meet with Asa's team of doctors and receive his next round of chemo. They took his blood first thing to check his levels to see if he was well enough for chemo or if he needed a transfusion. His levels were low but ok enough for him to receive chemo.
While meeting with the doctor, we heard the results from Asa's original bone marrow biopsy. His leukemia cells are showing a genetic change coming from a Philadelphia chromosome. This chromosome is producing a protein that he’s going to get additional meds for. This can be a genetic marker for CML (another type of leukemia) but they are still treating him for ALL at this time.
The Philadelphia chromosome is only in the leukemia cells. The expectation is that once this new med blocks the protein produced by the chromosome and the leukemia cells are gone, it won’t be there any more.
What this means for now is that he will be adding more meds to his daily routine.
We also started noticing some laziness in his eyes. The doctors are thinking this is a side effect of one of the meds he is taking and Asa is being referred to an ophthalmologist.
Praises:
- He has a great team of doctors and nurses who we trust and are able to answer all our questions.
- The research team discovered an anti-fungal med that will help keep Asa healthier during treatments.
- We've been blessed with meals, plumbing help, and other things this week that have been a real blessing to us!
Prayer Requests:
- That the new meds work well with no/minimum side effects.
- That this new genetic marker is not CML (time will tell).
