The Steinhaus Family
Based on these quotes from my medical record and my conversations with my doctors I shouldn’t be here right now:
“This patient has a high probability of sudden, clinically significant deterioration, which requires the highest level of physician preparedness to intervene urgently.”
“This critically ill patient requires frequent monitor and reassessment.”
“I managed/supervised life or organ supporting interventions that required frequent physician assessment. I devoted my full attention in the ICU to the direct care of this patient.”
“I’m not a very religious person but I have to wonder about things like this.”
As you probably know, I experienced septic shock—a severe, life-threatening condition that occurs when the body responds overwhelmingly to an infection, causing organ dysfunction and dangerously low blood pressure. In my case, the cause was a perforated gallbladder. This made me seriously ill from Wednesday through Saturday last week.
By an incredible stroke of grace, my scheduled chemotherapy session for that Wednesday was rescheduled. Had I undergone chemotherapy as planned, my body would have been severely compromised, and the consequences could have been fatal. I truly feel that this timing was providential.
The days that followed were rough, but thanks to swift medical intervention, the unwavering support of my visitors, and your countless prayers, I made it through. I am deeply thankful to be alive and back home with my family.
I have begun the road to recovery, which the doctors anticipate will take approximately one to two months.
Thank you for being there for me and my family in countless ways. Your kindness has profoundly touched us, and I am forever grateful.
With love,
Andrew
