The Stallard Family
The last few weeks have been busy with the usual day-to-day life and a lot of conversations about where to transfer Abigail’s care. As many of you know from our previous update, we recently went to CHOP for a second opinion. They agreed with Boston that Abigail’s airway is very critical, though each hospital had a slightly different plan and timing for how to move forward.
After a lot of prayer and asking God to make it clear where He wants us to go—by closing some doors and opening others—He did just that. One of the biggest doors He opened was that Medicaid agreed to cover part of Abigail’s airway reconstruction surgery in Boston. That’s huge because Medicaid rarely approves out-of-state care. It took many letters from doctors explaining why Abigail needs this specialized care, lots of patience, and plenty of prayer while we waited for an answer.
Right now, I’m still working on getting Medicaid to cover future appointments and surgeries in Boston, but we’re trusting that God will continue to provide as He has all along. With that being said, we’ve officially decided that Boston will be our second home. We feel a deep peace about this decision and about Abigail’s care team there.
This wasn’t an easy choice—both hospitals we visited are excellent—but the communication with Boston has been wonderful. Devin and I have been emailing back and forth with Abigail’s ENT surgeon, asking for clarity on certain parts of her upcoming airway reconstruction, and he’s been incredibly kind and patient in answering all our questions.
On another good note, Abigail is now getting real food through her G-tube instead of formula! This is such a big milestone. Her stomach is adjusting well, and she’s gaining weight faster than ever—she’s now about 28 pounds, the heaviest she’s ever been!
Please continue to keep Abigail in your prayers as we prepare for her surgery, which is just 22 weeks away. We’re so grateful for all of your love, support, and prayers throughout this journey.
