As many of you know, Abigail was scheduled to have her tonsils and adenoids removed this morning at UVA. Boston wanted this done before moving forward with her airway reconstruction surgery. Unfortunately, the surgery wasn’t successful. The ENT wasn’t able to remove her tonsils or adenoids because Abigail’s mouth is very small, which made it extremely difficult to get a good view.

The doctor shared with us that she tried for quite a while using different tools in hopes of finding one that would allow her to complete the procedure. At one point, she even sutured Abigail’s tongue to her lip to keep it out of the way. In the end, she wasn’t able to complete the removal, but she did dilate Abigail’s airway some since there was tissue buildup. As long as tonight goes well and there isn’t much bleeding from her trach, Abigail will be discharged tomorrow morning.

To be honest, Devin and I are feeling a bit discouraged. We thought there was finally a plan in place for Abigail’s airway care, and now it feels like we’re back at square one. We’ve already reached out to the ENT at Boston to let him know what happened and to hear his thoughts on what the next steps should be. I’ll share an update once we know more from him.

For now, we’ve decided to move forward with the procedure Abigail has scheduled at CHOP in October that I hadn’t officially canceled yet. They’ll do a triple scope to look at her airway, lungs, and jaw, and also check for acid reflux. We’re open to wherever the Lord leads us—whether that’s continuing with Boston or moving forward with CHOP.

If there’s one thing we’ve learned through this journey with Abigail, it’s that she always has her own plans, and God has her in the palm of His hands. Even when things feel overwhelming, we trust that He is guiding us.

Devin and I humbly ask for your continued prayers, especially over the next month, as we seek God’s direction and regroup after today’s setback.
