What a fun and busy weekend we had!

On Friday, we kicked off Mayfest by going to the hot-dog-and-cupcake-eating contest. Gunnar signed up for the cupcake-eating contest because he thought he could win. He ate a few cupcakes, but not all of them because he said they were “too sweet.” While we were there, we ran into my fitness coach and some of the girls who won the town pageant.

On Saturday, we got up early so we could go to the 5K that Mayfest was hosting for Abigail. I still can’t believe 61 people signed up for it. Devin and I are so grateful for every single runner who signed up and chose to run early in the morning when they could have been sleeping in instead. Every mile truly means so much to our family.

After the 5K was done, there was a kids' run where the kids could run a lap around the track. Gunnar was so excited to run and kept telling Devin and me how fast he was. Abigail, of course, decided to jump in on the fun and run too.

One thing people may not know about us is that we include Abigail in everything we do. Devin and I personally don’t believe in excluding her because of her medical complexity. Over the weekend, several people came up to us and told us how happy they were to see Abigail included in all the fun, and those comments truly meant a lot to us.

After the 5K, we headed home to refresh, then went back into town for all the Mayfest activities. Gunnar had a blast bungee jumping, eating cotton candy, and spending time in the bounce houses. Abigail loved walking around and watching a street entertainment show. As we were heading toward the carnival rides, we ran into Ms. Mayfest, whom we had briefly met the evening before. Abigail loved her crown and kept giving her high fives and fist bumps. Once we made it to the rides, she couldn’t wait to get on them. I honestly thought she might be scared, but she loved every second of it.

On Sunday we went to church and then headed to one of my favorite seafood restaurants for Mother’s Day. By Sunday evening, I was definitely ready to crash in bed lol.

This upcoming Thursday, Abigail and I leave for Boston for some appointments and imaging needed for her upcoming jaw surgery, which is now only 12 weeks away. It’s hard to believe how quickly it’s approaching.

Before I end this update, I want to give a big thank you to a few people:

  1. Marissa V. — She was the person in charge of the 5K, from planning everything to making sure it ran smoothly.
  2. Tammy H. — Some of you may know her as my fitness coach, but she has become such a big supporter of our family. She loves the kids and is always going out of her way to help others.
  3. Madison B. — She is the current Ms. Mayfest, and as I mentioned earlier, we met her on Friday after Abigail walked up to her. When we saw her again on Saturday, she was so kind and patient with Abigail while she kept touching her crown.

Lastly, we want to thank our Strasburg community for all of the support you have given our family over the last few months. We are truly blessed by the people in our small town.
