The ENT nurse from Boston called me earlier and said Dr. Rahbar doesn’t think GI needs to be involved since Abigail has been doing pretty well. Once she recovers from her tonsils and adenoids surgery, he’s ready to move forward with the airway reconstruction. Their insurance team will contact Humana for authorization once a surgery date is set.
I also called the ENT nurse at CHOP to let her know what Boston said and hear her thoughts. She explained that CHOP will not move forward with any airway surgery unless:
- They do a triple scope.
- Abigail’s acid reflux is very minimal or well-controlled with her current meds.
They want to make sure everything is in place so that she has the best possible chance for a smooth surgery and recovery — which we really appreciate. If her reflux isn’t under control in October when they do the scope, they’ll adjust her meds and rescope three months later. Once they feel she’s ready, they’ll schedule surgery.
The nurse reminded us that each hospital has its own process, and neither is necessarily right or wrong. She encouraged Devin and me to really weigh the pros and cons of both Boston and CHOP and decide which one to move forward with to avoid getting conflicting advice. She asked us to let her know by early next week.
We also learned that Humana has approved 1 procedure and 2 clinic visits through next July. Anything beyond that will need prior authorization.
Please pray with us that God gives us wisdom and peace as we decide where to go next — CHOP or Boston. Thank you all so much for being on this roller coaster journey with us.
