On 10/3 willow woke up with a fever, we adhered to protocol and headed to the hospital. Quick testing we found out she had covid and paraflu, so she was admitted. That was a Friday, by Wednesday a nurse noticed a wound on her leg that didn't look right. On Thursday a culture was done and Friday we found out she had a fungal infection. Antifungal was started and we waited, wound care was called in, more waiting. Then ENT was called in, followed by GI more waiting and more testing. Each team looking for any hidden areas of the infection. Thankfully the antifungal worked and no other spots were found. 10/16 she was taken for surgery on her leg, they cleaned out any but of infection they could see to help her body start healing. On top of all of this she had fevers that got as high as 103.7 and vomiting that lasted 15 days. As well as being severely neutropenic. Her little body was tired at this point and needed more assistance. So we made the decision to have an NG feeding tube placed. To top off this stay Willow celebrated her 5th birthday on 10/17. This wasn't how we pictured celebrating her birthday but we made the best of it. Though Monday afternoon when her Dr. said we could go home as long as we monitored her closely, keep her home and return to clinic twice a week it felt like the best gift she had gotten. Our family is tired and worn out but grateful and happy to be home. Though it's short lived as 10/28 she has her first scheduled stay in the hospital were she starts the 3rd cycle of her treatment.
