Brooklyn Hayward's Leukemia Fight
It's definitely been an eventful past few weeks. Last Monday, during her IVIG infusion, they gave Brooke IV fluids and IV nausea medication, which seemed to help her nausea for a little while. Unfortunately, she woke up during the night feeling very nauseous again, so we headed back to the hospital Tuesday morning for more IV fluids and nausea medication. The oncologist decided to admit her until they're able to get her nausea under better control. She also hasn’t been eating or drinking nearly enough due to the nausea. We’re not sure yet when she’ll be able to come home.
Her liver is also very unhappy right now. Her bilirubin is elevated, which is causing her skin and eyes to turn yellow. They have been running all sorts of tests to determine if she has an issue with her bile ducts and if this is chemotherapy or HLH related. Her oncologist is leaning towards changing her treatment plan to one that has fewer effects on the liver. We will know more later this week.
If Brooke is able to come home before this coming Friday, she will be readmitted on Friday for at least 72 hours for observation while she begins the next round of treatment due to potential side effects. The new treatment will be a 28-day continuous infusion, and Brooke will wear a backpack with the medication 24 hours a day.
Brooke has developed chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy in her feet, which is causing foot drop. PT came on Friday and worked with her, and yesterday, they brought her braces that she will wear in her shoes to help hold her feet up when she walks. She will also be getting a mobility walker.
