Finally, big news! In case you don’t know, I’ve been waiting on a new liver for the past several months because of a genetic condition called polycystic kidney and liver disease. And we finally have a match!
While all that was happening, Garrett heroically volunteered to go through the glamorous donor testing process. Miraculously, he passed. Less miraculously, it gave him yet another reason to brag about how “elite” his liver is. Truly, none of us needed that.
Although he was approved, we weren’t an exact fit, so we had to wait for a matched pair — and thankfully, they’ve finally arrived, proving that patience occasionally does pay off.
So here’s the plan:
I go into surgery on March 17th, and Garrett and his recipient go in on March 20th. After a very long year, we can almost see the finish line, and honestly, we can’t wait.

Our surgeries will take place at University Health in San Antonio. Garrett will likely be in the hospital for 5–10 days and I'll be there a bit longer while they fine-tune my new medicine cocktail. In a perfect world we will return to Austin quickly after that.
At first, we’ll probably have to limit visitors and deliveries due to infection risks — but trust me, by the time we’re both back in Austin, we’ll be so sick of each other that we’ll desperately need fresh faces. Please start mentally preparing your social calendars.
We’ll keep everyone posted on how things go, and once we’re back, we’ll gladly accept company, meals, help with errands, emotional support snacks — you know, the essentials.
Thank you all so much for being our support squad this year. I know it sounds cliché, but you really did make a hard season easier, lighter, and even fun at times. You guys are the best.
Stay tuned — more updates coming soon from us or our families!
