Mom was admitted to the hospital on 7/27 where it was discovered that what we originally thought was pneumonia was actually lung cancer. At this time, the running diagnosis is Stage 4 Non Small Cell Lung Cancer that has metastasized to her brain and spine.
Mom had lymph nodes biopsied and we are waiting for the pathology results to help determine what specific type of cancer this is. She discharged home yesterday (7/29). The doctors have recommended radiation on the mass in her right lung as it has grown and is making it difficult for her to breathe, and there is concern about her lung collapsing if the mass continues to grow. Unfortunately insurance has not approved her radiation treatments yet, so we are waiting for approval and then hoping to start that treatment asap. She will need about 13 radiation treatments over the next 2.5 weeks. Once we have the pathology results back from her lymph node biopsy, a plan will be made for how to best treat the lesions in her brain and other parts of her body. She has many tests planned in the upcoming weeks.
We are praying that we will find a treatment that gives mom the best quality of life and as much time with us as possible. Thank you for your prayers and offers of support. We have been devastated by this news and are still processing it, but we feel hopeful in spite of everything.
