We want to start by saying how grateful we are for everyone who has decided to support us. We have had completely unexpected gifts come from generous people who view their money as God’s money. We want to be more like you all in the way we pour out the love of God. We were fairly hesitant to ask for help because there are so many good things to give towards. We are completely amazed at the way our community has stepped in to support us in securing a vehicle for SirMichael and our family.
We (especially John) have spent MONTHS exploring every option we could find. He has spoken with many dealerships and mobility specialists. Per usual, he made a spreadsheet with all of our options- all price points, wheelchair lift types, cost analysis of buying a van and adding a conversion vs buying a van that was already converted. He ran VIN numbers to check for recalls on specific years and models. John has been working with a few dealerships on gently used Ford Transits and Ram Promasters that still have a good amount of warranty remaining and also can be modified without voiding the warranties. A full-size van is a FULL-SIZE investment. We want to steward these resources well and invest in a safe, reliable vehicle for our family.
We have identified we need a van with side entry that can keep SirMichael close, that also allows for space for his equipment and enough seats for the other kids as well as a path for them to get buckled in when they are so excited (… or embarrassed) in the school pick up line. We think we have landed on the Shift N Step side entry lift. Though expensive, this lift can be added to a longer van without major modification that would void warranties. This lift allows us to load SirMichael from the side. It keeps the rear of the van open for all the equipment we need to bring. This includes lots of medical devices, an activity chair, a stroller for baby girl, SirMichael’s travel bed and other equipment, and everything else for the four other children. This lift system means SirMichael can ride securely in his wheelchair while staying close to siblings. It gives us space to care for him while traveling and ensures our whole family can travel together.
We were able to rent a Shift N Step through United Access for a trip to see family this week for Christmas. We will get a better feel for the lift and whether we need to revisit the option of a manual side ramp. We should have an answer soon and be able to start moving forward. The entire process will take about 10 weeks. With all of your support, we are hopeful that we could possibly have our van by the end February.
We are amazed and humbled and stunned by God and all of you.
Thank you,
The Dawson Family
