Simeon is scheduled to have his open heart surgery this Monday (July 13th). This is the big one we've been waiting for. It’s an all-day affair, so Ben and I will see off Simeon first thing in the morning and wait to be reunited with him late afternoon. The hope is that once the major hole in the heart is repaired, then Simeon will be more stable to be at home with less respiratory support. And then we can start working on learning for the first time to swallow milk (or anything for that matter) and eventually eat food.

This surgery is open heart. While not a rare surgery as far as pediatric cardiac surgeries go, it still has short-term and long-term risks. We could not be more thankful that our particular surgeon, who attends our church, is the one operating on our son. We give thanks to the Lord for his years of arduous training, phenomenal skill, and gracious manner.

Prayer:
  • Please pray for Simeon’s safety. Pray Simeon remains healthy leading up to and post operation. Pray the repair is successful and for no ensuing complications related to the fact that it’s an open-heart operation.
  • Pease pray for the health and wisdom of the whole operating team, and especially for our surgeon.
  • Please pray for Ben and myself as we entrust (yet again) our son into the care of our Heavenly Father. Each one of us is always in His care, but we are acutely reminded of that bald truth in fresh ways when we sign consent forms and kiss Simeon goodbye before another major operation.
  • Please pray for stamina for Ben. He has been staying every night with Simeon the past fortnight and will do so until discharge.

Today marks 8 months in the hospital at TCH (1 month for me + 7 months for Simeon). Yes, we’re shocked by that count, too. It’s odd how “normal” it now feels to live in the hospital; and yet we are constantly reminded how ab-normal this all is. We feel the fragmentation and soul-wearying burden of it all in a myriad of ways. A very dear friend asked me this week, “How is God sustaining you through this season?” Foremostly, we have been sustained by seeing the tender and mighty hand of God writing our story. After all, it is only when any of us come to see our lives as storified that we can then truly experience Christian hope (and I hope to be able to write more on this later).

Thank you all for praying and for your love for our whole family!

We remain ever hopeful in Him.

Oh sweet Simeon, in the precious name of Jesus I bless you with good health this weekend. I pray against any virus, bacteria or germ that might be lurking. I send them to the foot of the cross. Almighty Jehovah Rapha, I bless this family and care team in Jesus name with amazing peace and wellbeing as they turn their faces towards you and lean into your Abba love and protection. So much love, Kathleen
