Radical Generosity

Beloved Family & Friends,

I’m not sure there are words big enough to adequately express the gratitude the Brown family is feeling right now. So I turned to Websters to find the right words and it was RADICAL because your generosity has certainly been “very different from the usual or traditional; going to great or exaggerated lengths.”

When we first asked for support for Katie and her family, we set a goal of $5,000. The hope was simply to help cover some of the family’s basic expenses while Katie is unable to work.

Today, a week later, donations have exceeded $14,000.

That number is overwhelming in the very best way. Every donation—large and small—has been a tangible reminder that Katie and the entire family are surrounded by people who love them, are praying for them and are willing to step in and help carry some of the weight.

How will the funds be used?

Because of your incredible generosity, the Brown Family is now able to think beyond simply covering their immediate day-to-day expenses. The additional funds will help cover the cost of maintaining Katie’s health benefits during any extended unpaid leave—one more significant financial concern they can hopefully take off their plate while their focus remains where it needs to be: on Katie’s health and her care.

How is Katie doing?

Over the past week, Katie’s condition itself has remained largely unchanged. She continues to experience seizures daily, and after nearly six weeks of this, the physical and emotional toll is understandably significant. So there is still a long road ahead, but right now the family is taking it one day at a time.

Important Note: I am extremely mindful to respect the family and Katie’s privacy as they navigate a very complex medical situation. Kate & Chris approve everything before I share.

Are we close to a diagnosis?

An earlier MRI identified a suspicious area in Katie’s amygdala, a structure located deep within the brain. Over the past week, much of the medical team’s attention has been focused on taking a closer look at this area, including another MRI—this time with contrast—to provide doctors with additional information.

At this point, her doctors believe this area is the most likely culprit, but there is still work to be done before they can definitively confirm that theory and determine exactly what it means for Katie and her treatment.

So, while we don’t have the answer yet, it finally feels like we may be getting closer to one. And after weeks of uncertainty, that progress means so much.

What is being done to help Katie while we wait for a diagnosis?

This week also brought a lot of progress for therapies to help manage some of the effects these repeated seizures are having on her body and daily functioning. Her care now includes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, including speech and physical therapy. Speech therapy is helping address muscle weakness in and around her mouth that has developed with the repeated daily seizures, while physical therapy is focused on improving her balance, mobility and strength.

WEEKLY PRAYER REQUEST

This week, we have two very specific prayer requests:

1. A definitive diagnosis.
Please continue praying for clarity for Katie’s doctors and that the testing and information they are gathering will finally provide the answers needed to confirm what is causing these seizures and determine the best path forward. We’re getting closer!!

2. Patience and endurance for the entire family.
Nearly six weeks of daily seizures, appointments, testing, uncertainty and constant care has taken a toll. Everyone is feeling the strain of adjusting to a “new normal” they never expected or asked for. Please pray for renewed strength, patience with one another, moments of genuine rest and the endurance to keep going while they wait for answers.

And finally, please know that the generosity shown to this family has meant far more than the dollar amount attached to it.

You have helped relieve a very real financial burden—but you have also reminded Katie and her family, over and over again, that they are not walking through this alone.

There are people standing beside them. People praying for them. People loving them. People carrying pieces of this burden when it becomes too heavy.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for being those people. ❤️

Please keep praying. We are hopeful that answers—and a clearer path forward—are getting closer.

With radical gratitude,
Ginny Dunn (Katie's Sister)
