Chelsea Brem and Family
Today brought some steady, encouraging steps forward for Chelsea.
Speech therapy went well. She practiced chewing and swallowing with a few Goldfish crackers. We also took an important next step with nutrition as she has now started protein shakes along with puréed foods like mashed potatoes and applesauce. Everything is being introduced slowly and carefully, and she’s tolerating these early taste tests well.
OT and PT worked together this morning to support her in standing at the sink, where she brushed her teeth and washed her face with a washcloth. After that, they took her for a short ride down the hallway in her new wheelchair, then carefully helped her walk back, about the length of three rooms, with support on all sides. It was a lot of hard work and took everything out of her, and she spent much of the day resting afterward.
Later in the afternoon, she surprised us with a second wind and was able to sit up in the recliner chair for a bit. It was a small but meaningful moment after such a full day.
We’ve also begun conversations with a few pediatric rehabilitation hospitals to better understand what Chelsea may need for her next steps. No decisions have been made yet as this is simply part of the planning and information gathering process.
And now for the big news…
Chelsea has officially moved out of the PICU and into a step down room. 🎉We are incredibly grateful for this transition. She remains on strict doctors’ orders for a very low‑stimulation environment to support her brain’s healing. That means limited visitation, quiet voices, short interactions, low lighting, minimal noise, zero screen time (for us and for her) and lots of rest and routine.
Thank you for continuing to hold Chelsea and our family close. Your love, encouragement, and steady support mean more than we can ever express.💗
