We were so thankful that Stetson was able to be removed from respiratory support….it seemed we were getting one day closer to taking him home….our next step was to see how he handles his feeds….He was currently being fed by an NJ tube which runs into his small intestines to help reduce the risk of aspiration….another tube was placed through his nose (poor guy had 2 tubes and seemed to me it would be impossible to breathe but his oxygen always stayed strong) this was an NG tube that went to his stomach and slowly we switched his feeds to NG and he did great with no reflux and he was also able to swallow some so the danger wasn’t quite as high for him to aspirate into his lungs….his suck reflex was still very weak and he was terrified when anything touched his face so bottle feeding really wasn’t an option….Dr said we won’t need to do the surgery to twist the stomach as he wasn’t struggling with reflux and that was a big praise the Lord! But he said we do need to have surgery to have a feeding tube placed…. I really didn’t feel good about it as I knew that would put more stress on his poor little body (undergoing surgery) but they said they won’t send us home with an ng tube we will need to have the g tube placed….we had also been noticing he was having lots of secretions so they decided to do a swab and make sure he doesn’t have a virus of some kind….and sure enough he was 4 1/2 weeks old and tested positive for the rhinovirus….so then he needed to be isolated in a room by himself we thought this was great because we were able to hold him as much as we wanted and have our own room….we had friends come see him and we would hang out in his room and then things took a turn about 3 days after he tested positive they tell us we have to be fully suited to be in his room, gown, gloves, mask and no visitors….we were heartbroken our poor baby cried so much and we couldn’t handle it….they did say his g tube surgery could not be done till he was completely recovered….I had a great conversation with his Dr and told him how we are just so ready to take our sweet boy home and he agreed and said we could go home soon without having the surgery….
