Mikey’s Surgery Update ❤️🩹
It’s been a really hard few days, but I wanted to share where we’re at and how Mikey is doing.
Yesterday, we got a call from pre-op saying Mikey's seizure medication needed to be given 4 hours earlier than usual. I’ve only ever adjusted by an hour, so I panicked—but thankfully, with help from his neurologist, we were able to adjust the timing slowly and safely.
We checked into a hotel last night to be closer to the hospital and went out for a nice dinner to give Mikey a fun night before surgery. He had a blast running around the hotel room and watching Peppa Pig. ❤️
This morning we checked out before 6am. We were lucky to grab a hot coffee and head to the hospital. Since we already did pre-op and blood work, check-in was pretty smooth—mostly paperwork and talking to the doctors and anesthesiologist. Our pre-op nurse was someone we knew, which helped make things feel a little more comforting.
Around 8:30am, Mikey gave me the tightest hug and fell asleep in my arms. That’s when they took him back to the OR. Surgery started shortly after.
Around 12:30pm, we got a call to speak with the neurosurgeon in the parent consultation room. He said Mikey did really well. The surgery went as planned, though they had to be cautious. They avoided going too far on the right side due to a large blood vessel that could’ve caused a serious bleed. They focused mainly on the left side.
The surgeon also said he saw a small flow of fluid down Mikey’s spine post-op, which is what they were hoping for with this Chiari Malformation Decompression surgery. That was a good sign.
Waiting to see him after surgery felt like forever. When we finally got in, Mikey was having a tough time with the ventilator—he’s not used to it, and the meds they gave to thicken his trach secretions made it even harder. He needed anti-nausea meds and pain meds to help settle him.
He’s been in and out all day, hasn’t said anything yet, and hasn’t eaten by mouth. The doctor just came by and told us tonight and tomorrow will be the hardest days. They’re estimating a 5-day hospital stay, but it all depends on how Mikey does.
It’s so hard seeing your baby in pain—I’d take it all away if I could. 💔
Mike and I finally had something to eat, but our minds are fully on Mikey. The girls are home with Mike’s parents and doing well, thankfully.
We’re just taking it day by day.
Thank you all for your support, love, and prayers. Please keep them coming for Mikey. 💙
