first general update

Hi all, thanks for being here.

I wanted to share a quick update on what I know so far and what the next steps will be. Just before Christmas, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. It still feels pretty surreal, especially since I’m not experiencing any symptoms.

Currently, I’m staged at 1B Grade 3. It is referred to as “Triple Positive breast cancer” which sounds scary but is not necessarily a bad thing in terms of treatability. This staging may change based on what additional biopsies and a PET scan show. Even though I’m waiting on more details, the general plan at this time is to move forward with 6 doses of chemo 3 weeks apart for a total of 18 weeks, then surgery after chemo is finished.

I am grateful for so many positive things so far: I am fully confident in the physicians and team directing my care, I feel mentally and physically strong going into this, I have incredible support both locally and afar (if you’re reading this, that’s you), and the cancer looks to be treatable/curable.

I’ll use this hub for updates on care and specific needs. You are very welcome to reach out personally, but please know that I will likely not have the capacity to reply right away or at all sometimes. More to come soon, thanks for being part of this journey!

Oh, Sarah, I'm so sorry you're going through this. As someone who as gone through it (chemo, mastectomy, radiation), you will get out on the other side. This stage is so overwhelming. All the appointments, tests, telling people. I felt much better when I had a treatment plan and could start to move forward. It's so good that you trust your medical team. Please do not hesitate to reach out ANYTIME if you want to vent or ask a weird question to someone who's been there - 605.670.1809.

Sarah - You will live a long and happy life. please try to think of this as just a big hiccup along the way. The chemo will not be fyn but you are so healthy - mentally and physically - you'll manage it pretty well. The amount of leaming you will want/need to do will at times be overwhelming, but you've got this! (I just finished a year of treatment for my leukemia and am in "complete remission" - There is definitely light at the end if the tunnel!) Sending love - Aunt Laura
