In July of 2025, without warning Rafa had an ischemic stroke that caused a cerebral infarction. In other words part of his brain was depleted of oxygen due to a blood vessel blockage and that caused injury/death of some brain tissue.
The consequences of the cerebral infarct (injury to the brain) was very severe. For weeks Rafa was hooked to machines that kept him alive. He underwent several surgeries, and even when he was stable enough to be off the machines he still found himself fully paralyzed.
Ever since then he has been going through treatments and therapies to increase his chances of regaining some movement, and relearning life in this new condition.
He has proved he is still there by responding to yes or no questions with intentions sets of blinks. He hears, sees, understands when we speak with him, cries when he gets frustrated. He is there - which is already a miracle. So we will continue to fight for him with all we have.
I speak for all of my family when I say that we believe in miracles. All miracles in scripture started from a situation of hopelessness, but we believe in the Creator of All Things. Jesus has taken care of Rafa so far and He won't stop now. We don't understand why his journey had to take this turn, but we believe that nothing escapes God's plans, and He is walking this journey with Rafa and us.
