We were able to visit Oskar yesterday at Penn Vet. Still in ICU for close monitoring and dialysis. His legs are so weak from being hospitalized and on rest for 2 weeks. He so much more energy now and is happy to see everyone around him. Still being very selective with food and snacks but we were able to get some bananas, milk bones, cheese and junk food in him. They’re working on advancing his appetite and decreasing some medications. Kidneys and liver are still injured and not bouncing back as much as we hoped in the last few days. Still waiting on liver biopsy results from Cornell after over a week…. Medical team is leaning more towards a cause of some sort of poisoning instead of leptospirosis until it can be confirmed by labs. Physical therapy saw him yesterday to give some hind leg exercises to get him moving better. He will be staying over the weekend and possibly next week to continue dialysis to get his creatinine down to a better baseline before discharging. Liver enzymes have been holding steady but his AlkPhos spiked for an unknown reason. They are investigating that and how to adjust treatments based on liver function. Obviously when he comes home he will have chronic liver and kidney disease now which will effect his diet and medications but god willing he will strengthen up and be able to tolerate activity and his new prescription bland diet. We remain cautiously optimistic based on a few setbacks and disappointments last night. He was so happy to see us and play with his toy fishy and catch treats and fishy mid air. He’s such a stud in the hospital and has made friends and stole hearts with every single person he’s come in contact with. Can’t wait until we can visit him again and hopefully bring him home after next weeks treatment and lab work monitoring. Keep thinking of Oskar and his medical team as they are all on a rocky road of detective work and healing.
Tracy, Oskar and I thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts who have reached out, supported and donated to help his recovery and treatment. Never would I have thought I would be posting updates on a group like this but times are extremely tough right now and very challenging for us so we accepted the help that was offered to us by family and friends. Keep praying for him and send us all the positive vibes and memories to keep us cheered up. We are very emotionally drained and sad over this but will keep staying strong and positive.
Thank you all again and keeps in your thoughts and prayers.
Sincerely,
Oskar, Tracy and Kevin
