The measuring cup comment in my last post is definitely random as I review that post- I wrote with stream of consciousness.... but honestly, something as simple as a set of measuring cups, or one nice big Pyrex one makes a difference in how I'm able to prepare a meal. I'm so grateful that we can cook in our living quarters - bake, no. But we have two electric cooktops, a microwave, normal sized refrigerator AND a dishwasher that we did not have during the first 1.5 months following the fire.
Gratitude! that's my daily theme. I don't waste time thinking about what I don't have, but appreciate the very simple necessities that so many of us take for granted.
Seriously, I've never made rice like this, but rather than "guess" at the amount of water to use to make rice, I bought the almost "instant" rice - and guess what! It really was ok.... but from a cost perspective, I'd rather get a bag of rice lol.
Because we have a functioning kitchen we have not had to eat out since we moved to our location in Hawthorne. That's a big deal. I don't eat fast food - so eating out wasn't cheap.... we sure did have some good ramen downtown as well as an amazing breakfast bowl that Jade and I would share. Thank goodness for Whole Foods prepared foods. Basically, that's what we lived on initially.
First day in the "suite" I made greens.... yep, and then I cut my finger and had to go to Urgent Care the next day.... oh well - i got a new knife and it was SHARP. All is well now! One Day At A TIme!

But seriously, these are the things that come up and I feel empty and lost. I really would appreciate family recipes - and I'll share what I have. I do have some things scanned (thank goodness). But this weekend - well mostly today, I had a real emotional time. The depth and breadth of what is lost forever is hard to accept sometimes when looked at, at large. I really try not to tread down that path because it's not a good place to go. I could care less about things that were lost that can be replaced in stores or whatever. Nah..... there is so much history that is lost... my own personal history - everything I ever created, pretty much, with a few exceptions that I put online are gone forever. I don't want to be dramatic - but today, I just felt very low, very empty..... Not ungrateful - the most important thing is that Jade is alive because someone cared enough to come get her... all the way fro,m Calabasas. They just had a feeling she wasn't OK. I'm eternally grateful. I can't repay that kind of thing - and they don't expect me to - not blood family, but family of the heart - and I will NEVER FORGET what they did for her. There's so much I havent discussed here. It's taken some time for me to get some distance. To escape the shock and initial numbing and stunning feelings I had.
People don't get it - it's not a house that burned....
Love you Cousin - xoxo
