Two months ago…Yes, it’s been that long. The flurry of doctor’s visits have begun to subside, until another round starts later this fall. Most of their prognostications are bland and uninteresting, which, after all that has happened, is a good thing.
Our thoughts turn ever more to the future and where God would have us. We are stepping away from that July 3rd night day by day, and there are definitely things that we don’t want to remember but are realizing that we should. There is so much that we learned about God during that time that is embedded in the experience. God taught me that He loves me and He literally does that through His people and most uniquely through His church.
Have you ever had God speak to you audibly? I have. When close friends visited Amy and I in the hospital and just sat and talked with us for no other reason than to let us know that we were loved and not alone, that was God talking to us. Have you ever had God literally give you a hug? I have. When I entered church after being gone for a month, I was hugged by God so many times it was hard to get to the doughnuts. Have you ever literally had God personally sit and wait with you through the night when you were scared to be alone. I have. When my father-in-law came and spent hours staying awake through the night so that I could rest, that was God making His presence known. (Man, I am going through a lot of Kleenex writing this.) God is real. I have never been more sure or confident.
So, what am I going to be doing in six months or a year? Will I get my voice back? Will my eye be healed? I have no idea. What I do know right now is that God is sovereign. He has a plan. It is the best plan. He is faithful. He will always be there. He loves me. He loves you. That is good news. That is great news!
I pray that we do not try to forget too quickly and instead rejoice in this seemingly uncomfortable time of learning and growth. I wrote these few lines after a week in the hospital. “Don’t hold on to this life. It is for correction. It is for refining. It is a blessing, a gift, a glad burden. It is to know that God loves me.” I feel like God has been clarifying those thoughts in the weeks and months since I wrote them.
I want to encourage you all to remember my story, our story, because you were all a part of it. God literally wrote me checks and forged all your signatures on them. He is ever at work in and through His people. Encourage fellow believers. Remind them through this story and others of what God is still doing. Share with those who don’t know Him the hope and peace that can only come through believing in Him and His ultimate act of love.
Prayer requests
1. I need more Kleenex.
2. Amy and I (and the kids) are not immune to sadness, doubt, and despair. Pray that God would keep our eyes fixed on Him as we seek His will for our lives. There is nothing clear right now about vocational next steps for me. We are wondering about picking up some of the ideas we had for work (photography business) that we had started before all this but are not sure this is still the path. If you have ideas or connections for me, I would love to hear them.
3. Continued prayer for Amy. (Actually you can just pray for her forever since she is married to me.) She has done and continues to do so much for our family during this time when all I can do is sit and watch. God has been faithful. Pray that we would trust Him as we seek His leading in our lives.
4. I don’t know how much longer we will keep giving updates. I do want to lift you all up in thanks to God and pray that the good work that He has done through you will continue in your lives and that you will ever more be ready and willing vessels of His love and mercy. We truly have been blessed by God through you.
Thank you,
Mike, Amy, Emma, Elijah, Gabriel, Evelyn and Finn
