Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of doctors’ offices…
Our latest visit this week was with another eye specialist looking at some potential foreign objects in my eyelids and educating us about future options for my left eye. Thankfully he said that it was nothing to worry about, and they would work themselves out. At this point, there is nothing much to do except wait for more healing in and around the eyes. Time will tell whether I get a cool flashlight prosthetic eye or not. Amy says not.
Speaking of waiting, that is mostly all I can do in regards to my voice. I will start speech therapy in a couple weeks, but it's hard to say how much that will do with my left vocal cord not moving.

Although the healing in general continues, I feel that I have reached a plateau in it all, and I am forced to look around and assess my new reality. There was the initial acceptance of my new limitations in the hospital and the weeks after, but now I am challenged to accept it every time I explore and interact with the world I knew. Sometimes there are harsh reminders of this new reality, like when I try to sing and suddenly remember my voice can't really do it. I am challenged to respond with joy and not despair every single time I reach for some part of my life that was once familiar—the tools that I have used for so many years, the morning routine of making coffee, and even walking through my house. Each moment is a challenge and an opportunity. I am challenged to continue to trust God and His timing or to give in to despair. I am presented with opportunities to give up on peace and joy or to be calm and remember my hope is in God who has remained faithful.
We will always be tempted to take our eyes off of the only One who is worthy and able to keep us and look to ourselves for salvation and find none. This has been hard for me in my circumstances, but I pray that each of you may be reminded and encouraged. “So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day.” 2 Corinthians 4:16
May God sustain us and keep us as He has graciously promised to do. What a great God! Thank you to all of you who continue to pray for our family. You mean so much to us!
Some specific prayer requests:
- What I talked about above is no small thing for me. Facing doubt every day is tough, and I thought I was tough. I’m not, not at all. Pray that I would not lose hope and that God would continue to lead me in every step He has laid out. And practically, please pray for direction for future work for me as I strive to provide for my family.
- The future is God’s alone to know. Please pray for my beloved wife Amy as she continues to shoulder so much. We both need God to sustain us and guide us through this time.
- Pray for our family that God would comfort and sustain each of our children in their faith, and that as parents, we would be faithful to our calling to teach and lead our children to Christ alone.
