Merida’s journey began even before birth, when an ultrasound raised concerns of Mermaid syndrome. At delivery, she faced a dislocated hip, an underdeveloped hip, clubbed feet, and a fractured femur. Her start was rough, but we pressed forward through months of castings and countless specialist visits. Over time, she was diagnosed with Arthrogryposis multiplex and scoliosis, leading to more than 20 procedures on her hips, back, and feet.

Her most recent surgery—a spinal fusion—was successful, giving her greater mobility. Remarkably, Merida now recovers quickly, often leaving the hospital within 24 hours and continuing rehabilitation at home. Through it all, her determination has inspired others: in hospital hallways, adult patients see her walking despite her struggles and find strength to push themselves a little further.

Merida’s story is one of courage, perseverance, and the ability to uplift everyone around her.
